Tamil School

SELANGOR Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim announced that a new Tamil school with hostel facilities would be built on a 4ha site in Coalfield Estate in Ijok, Batang Berjuntai, reported Makkal Osai.

This is the first Tamil school in the country with hostel facilities.

Speaking to reporters after honouring top UPSR scorers, he said the state government was currently having talks with KL Kepong Development on the land and construction is expected to begin in three months.

He said the state government had given RM20mil as grants for the development and maintenance of Tamil schools since March 2008.

> Malaysia Nanban reported that only 9% of the nation's 11 million workers were unionised, a figure lower than Japan, Britain and Singapore.

In Singapore, about 18% of workers are in trade unions with 21% and 29% respectively for Japan and Britain.

MTUC vice-president A. Balasubramaniam said unions in this country faced a lot of challenges and were still lagging behind.

The Human Resources Ministry had been urged to keep an eye on the challenges of forming trade unions and the Government must recognise the need for workers to be unionised.

Balasubramaniam said employers should treat trade unions as partners in the development of their companies rather than looking at workers and unions as their enemy.
